You unpublished a Claude artifact, maybe to fix something or to stop people opening it for a while. Now you want it back, and Claude says "This artifact was previously unpublished. Create a new artifact to publish again." There is no Republish button. Here is why, what you can do inside Claude, and how to get a page you can take down and put back whenever you want.
Why Claude won't republish it
- Unpublishing is one way. Claude's help center says that once you unpublish an artifact, you can't publish that same artifact again. You have to make a new one.
- The saved data goes too. Unpublishing permanently deletes the artifact's personal and shared storage, so anything people saved inside it is gone.
- A new artifact means a new link. When you publish a new artifact it gets its own link, so every link you already sent stays dead.
- Claude Code is different. Pages that Claude Code publishes keep one link and update in place. The rule above is for artifacts made in a Claude chat, which is where most people run into it.
Inside Claude, Remix is the only way back
Open the artifact, copy it into a new chat, and ask Claude to make it again. Publish the new artifact and you get a new link. Then send that link to everyone again, and know that anything people saved in the old one is gone.
Put it on DocStash instead
DocStash is a home for the pages and docs your AI makes. Every page gets one link that never changes. Publish it, unpublish it, and publish it again as often as you like, and nothing is deleted along the way. Bring the HTML you already have, or connect Claude and let it stash the page for you.
Already have the HTML?
- Drop the file below. Drag it anywhere on this page, or choose it. It becomes a webpage with its own link, private until you publish it.htmlmdtextpdf
- Share it. Click Publish for a public link, or share it with specific people.
Let Claude stash it for you
- and follow the quick setup. No coding, no keys.
- Ask Claude to stash it. Say "stash this artifact to DocStash". You get one link like
docstash.ai/<slug>, private until you publish it. - Publish, unpublish, publish again. Click Publish for a public link. Unpublish when you need to and publish again later. It comes back at the same link, and nothing is deleted while it is offline.
- Update it in place. Ask Claude for changes and stash again. The link always shows the latest version, and every earlier version stays in Activity.

FAQ
Why does Claude say "This artifact was previously unpublished"?
Claude only lets you publish a chat artifact once. After you unpublish it, Claude blocks publishing it again and asks you to create a new artifact instead.
Can I get my old Claude link back?
No. The old link stops working when you unpublish, and a new artifact gets a new link. On DocStash a page keeps its link through any number of unpublish and publish cycles.
What happens to the data saved in the artifact?
Claude deletes an artifact's personal and shared storage when you unpublish it. DocStash keeps the page and all its versions when you unpublish. Only the public link turns off.
Does this happen to every Claude artifact?
It applies to artifacts published from a Claude chat, which Claude now calls legacy artifacts. Newer chat artifacts start private and use Claude's sharing settings, and Claude Code artifacts update at the same link.
Can I share it with only certain people?
Yes. On DocStash a page starts private. Share it with specific people by email as viewers or editors, or publish it for anyone with the link.
Take it down and put it back, same link
