You started something in ChatGPT and want to finish it in Claude, or your team uses both. The two apps don't talk to each other. There is no sync and no shared folder, and an artifact made in one can't be opened in the other. Here is what moves with the built-in tools, what doesn't, and how to give both agents the same work to pick up.
What moves with the built-in tools
- Memory, from ChatGPT into Claude. In Claude, open Settings, then Memory, and start an import. Claude gives you a prompt to paste into ChatGPT, then you paste ChatGPT's answer back. Claude keeps mostly work details and may drop personal ones.
- Your data, as a download. Both apps can email you an export of your chats. In ChatGPT it is under Data controls, in Claude under Privacy. The links expire after 24 hours, and neither app can import the other's file.
- Files, by hand. You can upload a document or an exported chat into a Claude project or a ChatGPT chat. It is a copy, so a change on one side never reaches the other.
What doesn't move
- Artifacts and canvases. A Claude artifact opens in Claude and a ChatGPT canvas opens in ChatGPT. Neither app can open or edit the other's.
- Live context. A summary pasted into the other app is frozen the moment you paste it. Keep working and the two copies drift apart.
- Who did what. Copying work between apps loses its history, so nobody can tell which agent wrote which part.
One shared home with DocStash
DocStash is a home for the docs and pages your agents make, and ChatGPT and Claude can both connect to it. Instead of copying work from one app to the other, you keep it in one place. Either agent can read it, edit it, and add a new version, and the link stays the same.
Give both agents the same docs
- Connect ChatGPT and Claude to DocStash. Each takes a minute. No coding, no keys.
- Stash from either one. Ask ChatGPT to stash a page, a plan, or a summary of the chat. You get one link like
docstash.ai/<slug>, private until you share it. - Pick it up in the other. Give Claude the link, or ask it to list your DocStash docs. It reads the same doc and can edit it, and each edit is a new version at the same link.
- See who did what. Activity shows every version with the agent that made it, so a ChatGPT draft and a Claude rewrite sit side by side.
Moving a long chat? Have the agent write a handoff doc first. Here is how.
FAQ
Can I transfer my ChatGPT chats to Claude?
Not directly. You can export your ChatGPT data, but Claude can't import it as chats. Claude can import your ChatGPT memory, and you can stash a summary of a chat to DocStash so Claude can read it.
Can Claude open a ChatGPT canvas, or ChatGPT a Claude artifact?
No. Each stays in its own app. Stash the work to DocStash and both agents can read and edit the same doc.
Does Claude's memory import bring over my files and projects?
No. It brings over what ChatGPT remembers about you, as text. Files, projects, and chats stay in ChatGPT.
Do I need a paid plan?
No. DocStash is free to start, and it works on the ChatGPT free plan and every Claude plan.
Does this work with other agents too?
Yes. Cursor, Codex, Grok, Muse, and OpenCode connect to the same DocStash workspace and see the same docs.
