How to compact ChatGPT chats

Coding agents like Claude Code have a compact command that shrinks a long conversation in place. ChatGPT does not. A long ChatGPT chat just keeps growing until it slows down, drifts, and forgets earlier turns. The workaround is to compact it yourself. Have ChatGPT write a tight Markdown summary of where things stand, stash it to one link on DocStash, and open a fresh chat from that link. Here is how.

Why your ChatGPT chat slows down

The most common reason a ChatGPT chat gets slow is length. Every time you send a message, ChatGPT re-reads the entire conversation to write its reply, so a longer thread means more to process and a longer wait.

  • The conversation is long. ChatGPT re-processes the full history on every turn, so replies slow down as the thread grows and it nears the context limit.
  • ChatGPT does not auto compact. Rather than summarizing, it may quietly trim older messages to stay within the context limit, so it loses key details from earlier in the chat while still feeling slow.
  • Something outside the chat. Browser extensions, many open tabs, low device memory, a weak network, or a ChatGPT outage can slow it too. Rule these out if a short, new chat is also slow.

If a new chat is fast but a long one crawls, the length is the cause, and ChatGPT has no compact button to fix it in place. Compacting the chat into a doc and starting fresh gives you a short, fast thread again, with the context carried over instead of trimmed away. The steps below show how.

Compact a ChatGPT chat in four steps

  1. Ask ChatGPT to compact the chat. Tell it to compress the conversation, the decisions made, and the open threads into a Markdown doc.
  2. Stash it on DocStash. Ask ChatGPT to save that doc to DocStash. You get one link like docstash.ai/<slug>.
  3. Start a fresh chat. Open a new ChatGPT conversation and paste the DocStash URL.

Why is my ChatGPT chat so slow?
