How to publish a ChatGPT  site without Google indexing it

3 min read

TLDR

  • A public ChatGPT site can show up in Google Search, and ChatGPT Sites has no setting to stop it.
  • Its sharing settings control who can open a site. Once it is public, anyone can find it.
  • Publish on DocStash instead, a public page that always stays out of Google.

ChatGPT built you a site and you want to send the link around, just not have it show up on Google. A public ChatGPT site can land in Google Search, and there is no setting to keep it out. Here is what the settings do control, and how to publish a page that is open to anyone with the link and always stays out of search.

What ChatGPT Sites lets you control

  • Who can open it, not who can find it. A site can be limited to you and your workspace admins, to selected people, to invited outside viewers who sign in, to your workspace, or opened to anyone on the internet.
  • It can land on Google. Open a site to anyone on the internet and search engines can index it. There is no noindex option and no setting to hide a public site from search.
  • Taking it down means restricting or deleting. You can narrow who has access, or delete the site for good. Deleting can't be undone.
  • OpenAI has been here before. In 2025 a share option let ChatGPT chats show up in web searches. OpenAI removed it within days, after shared chats turned up in Google results.
  • It is paid only. Sites is for paid ChatGPT plans. On the free plan there is nothing to publish with.

Publish it on DocStash instead

DocStash is a home for the pages your AI makes. A page you publish there opens for anyone with the link, no login needed, but it tells search engines not to index it, so it always stays off Google. Bring the HTML you already have, or connect ChatGPT and let it stash the site for you.

Already have the HTML?

  1. Drop the file below. Drag it anywhere on this page, or choose it. It becomes a webpage with its own link, private until you publish it.
    htmlmdtextpdf
  2. Share it. Click Publish for a public link, or share it with specific people.

Let ChatGPT stash it for you

  1. and follow the quick setup. It works on every ChatGPT plan, including free.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to stash it. Say "stash this site to DocStash". You get one link like docstash.ai/<slug>, private until you publish it.
  3. Publish it, out of Google. Click Publish and anyone with the link can open it, no login needed. DocStash tells search engines not to index it, so it always stays off Google.
  4. Choose who sees it. Keep it private, share it with certain people as viewers or editors, or publish it. Unpublish any time and publish again at the same link.

FAQ

Do ChatGPT sites show up on Google?

Yes. A site open to anyone on the internet can be indexed by Google, and ChatGPT Sites has no setting to stop it. To keep a public page out of search, publish it on DocStash, where public pages are never indexed.

Can I turn off search indexing for a ChatGPT site?

No. ChatGPT Sites has no setting for it. The only way to keep a site out of search is to stop it being public, by limiting it to you, selected people, or your workspace.

How do I take a ChatGPT site off the internet?

Change its access to just you or selected people, or delete it from the site settings. Deleting is permanent.

Does DocStash work on the ChatGPT free plan?

Yes. Connect DocStash to ChatGPT on any plan and it can publish pages, even though Sites is paid only.
