You asked Claude for a page and got an artifact. Then a teammate saw a different Share button, a link stopped working, or an artifact refused to publish again. None of that is you. Claude now has several kinds of artifacts, and each kind has its own rules. Here is what each one does, where they differ, and how to keep one set of rules for everything you share.
The three kinds of Claude artifacts
Chat artifacts
- Made in a Claude chat. They work on every plan once code execution and file creation are turned on, and they are saved in the Artifacts tab in the sidebar.
- Private until you share. On Free, Pro, and Max you pick Only you or Anyone with the link. Team and Enterprise add Only people invited and Anyone at your organization.
- Viewers need a Claude account. And an artifact that uses Claude or connects to your apps can't be shared by link at all.
- Sharing is a desktop job. The iOS and Android apps let you view and edit artifacts, but not change who can see them.
Legacy artifacts
- Chat artifacts made before September 16, 2026. They still work, but Claude no longer makes new ones.
- Published to a public link. Anyone with the link can open one, no Claude account needed.
- Unpublishing is final. You can't publish the same artifact again, and its saved data is deleted. Here is what to do instead.
Claude Code artifacts
- Made by Claude Code. They are on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and they collect at claude.ai/code/artifacts.
- One link that updates. Each publish becomes a new version at the same link. Users report the Version history menu that let you pick or restore a version went missing in September 2026.
- Tied to the session that made it. A new session makes a brand new artifact unless you give Claude the existing link.
- Public links need an owner's OK. On Team and Enterprise, an organization owner has to turn on external sharing first.
Where the rules split
- Republishing. A legacy artifact can't be published again once you unpublish it. A Claude Code artifact keeps one link through every update.
- Who can open a link. A legacy public link opens for anyone. Newer chat artifacts are shared with people who have Claude accounts, and an artifact that uses Claude counts against the viewer's own plan limits.
- Search. Claude has no setting to keep a public link out of search engines. Anthropic says a link becomes findable once someone posts it somewhere public.
- Admin switches. Team and Enterprise owners can turn off artifacts, external sharing, and email invites for the whole organization, which also turns off existing public links.
- Version history. Claude's help center describes no version history for chat artifacts, and users report the Version history menu disappeared from claude.ai, the desktop app, and Claude Code. Here is how to keep every version.
One set of rules on DocStash
DocStash is one home for everything your AI makes, whether it came from a Claude chat, Claude Code, or another agent. Every page follows the same rules. It starts private, you can share it with specific people or publish it to anyone with the link, it always stays out of search, and it keeps one link through every update and every unpublish. Every version is kept too, with who made it and which agent, and any of them comes back in one click.
Already have the HTML?
- Drop the file below. Drag it anywhere on this page, or choose it. It becomes a webpage with its own link, private until you publish it.htmlmdtextpdf
- Share it. Click Publish for a public link, or share it with specific people.
Let Claude stash it for you
- and follow the quick setup. No coding, no keys.
- Ask Claude to stash it. A chat artifact or a Claude Code page, it lands as one page with one link like
docstash.ai/<slug>, private until you share it. - Share it your way. Click Publish for anyone with the link, no account needed, or share it with specific people as viewers or editors. Public pages always stay out of search.
- Change your mind any time. Unpublish and publish again at the same link, and update it from any agent. Every version stays in Activity, and any earlier one comes back in one click.
FAQ
What is the difference between a Claude artifact and a Claude Code artifact?
A chat artifact is made in a Claude chat and shared through Claude's sharing settings. A Claude Code artifact is a page Claude Code publishes, with one link that gets a new version each time Claude updates it.
What is a legacy artifact in Claude?
A chat artifact made before September 16, 2026. It still works and can still be published, but once you unpublish it you can't publish it again.
Do people need a Claude account to open my artifact?
It depends on the kind. A published legacy artifact opens for anyone. Newer chat artifacts are shared with people who sign in to Claude. A DocStash page you publish opens for anyone with the link, no account needed.
Can Google find my published Claude artifact?
Claude has no setting to keep a public link out of search. If someone posts the link somewhere public, search engines can find it. DocStash always keeps published pages out of search.
Why can't I change sharing on my phone?
Claude's mobile apps let you view and edit artifacts, but sharing settings only change on the web or in Claude Desktop.
