ChatGPT's connectors became apps, then plugins, but the idea stayed the same. ChatGPT reaches your tools through a directory of ready plugins, and through custom MCP servers you add yourself.
What you can do
The plugin directory holds ready integrations like Gmail, Google Drive, GitHub, Outlook and Microsoft Teams. Install one, sign in, and ChatGPT can search and act in it. For a tool the directory doesn't list, turn on developer mode and add a custom MCP server by its URL. Which plans get custom servers, and whether they can write data, depends on the plan.
In ChatGPT's directory
- DocStash
- Gmail
- Google Drive
- GitHub
- OneDrive
- Microsoft Teams
Custom (MCP)
- Your work tools
- Your second brain
- Your team wiki
- Your automations
- Your own app
- Your client's app
- Gmail and Outlook. Find the latest on a project across your inbox and draft the reply.
- Google Drive. Answer from your team's docs and sheets in one search.
- GitHub. Sum up open pull requests, or explain what changed in a release.
- Linear or Sentry. Turn an error into a ticket, or find what is blocking a release.
Connect DocStash
DocStash is a home for the pages, apps and docs your AI makes. DocStash is in ChatGPT's plugin directory, so it installs in one click. After that, ChatGPT can save a page or doc to one link that stays private until you share it, keeps every version, and opens in any browser. Claude, Gemini and other agents connected to DocStash can pick up the same page.
- Ask ChatGPT to save it. Say "save this page to DocStash". ChatGPT shows a preview, and Stash gives you a link like
docstash.ai/<slug>, private until you share it. - Keep building. Ask for changes and save again. The same link shows the latest version, and Activity keeps every earlier one.
- Share it. Make the link public, or invite people by email.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT support MCP?
Yes. Directory plugins and custom servers both run on MCP, and Codex, which shares the same directory, adds MCP servers from the terminal.
Where did connectors go?
OpenAI renamed connectors to apps, and later grouped apps into plugins. Look under Settings, then Plugins.
Do I need a paid plan for custom MCP servers?
Custom servers need developer mode, which is limited to some plans, and workspace admins can turn it off. Directory plugins like DocStash don't need it.
Is it safe to add a custom MCP server?
OpenAI doesn't review custom servers, so only add ones you trust. ChatGPT asks you to confirm before a tool writes data.
